A bit of news on the DFG front. This letter was sent to us from the Lake Sabrina staff who received the letter from the Inland Aquaculture Group LLC (Home of the Alpers Trout):

October 15, 2010

Good Afternoon:

Earlier this week we sent notices urging our customers to purchase more Alpers Trout to insure the 2011 Fishing Season Opener would be a successful one. We did so, in light of this year’s stocking hold up due to the Center of Biodiversity’s lawsuit against DFG over the Willow Flycatcher. We are sorry to report that it appears that the other shoe is about to drop.

DFG will be voting on an item that WILL impact our area and the entire state. Phase 1 if passed, in a nutshell, each owner, operator or concessionaire will be responsible to do an Environmental Impact Report to evaluate for 87 species of concern. The EIR?s will be done by a biologist, not DFG, at the owner, operator or concessionaire’s expense! Currently, there is no such company or biologist in the area qualified to do these EIR?s.

This means if you, the County or Grandpa Bob want fish next year in any body of water whether on your property, County property, LADWP property, BLM property or on USFS land, there will have to be an EIR done. Should there be any one of the 87 species of concern (this includes: plants, insects, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals), you will not be permitted to stock fish.

Should the DFG Commission pass this critical vote next month, it will impact the entire state, not just Inyo and Mono Counties.

There is a group, the California Association for Recreational Fishing who is trying to stop DFG thru legal channels. Please check their website at www.savecalfishing.org. The site has information about economic impact, what needs to be down and what you can do. This group is in position to fight for our rights. We support their cause as it is our cause as well.

Thank you,

Timothy P Alpers

IT’S THAT TIME AGAIN

WATCH OUT FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS

ONCE THEY HAVE THEIR EYE TO THE LENS THEIR BRAINS TEND TO DISENGAGE & ARE APT TO WANDER INTO THE ROAD!

OK, it appears Mom Nature is having a bit of fun again. A bit of s-n-o-w here a bit of warm weather there, oh and don’t forget the w-i-n-d. It’s definitely FALL. The Aspen leaves are starting to lighten up a bit more. And with MOM playing her games, we have NO idea when the color peak will take place. If any of you have any special in-site on when this awesome peak will be, please give us a call so we can answer all the questions we’ll be getting and don’t have a clue to the answers.

Once again this week’s catching was good. Pretty much the same was working at the Inlets – jigs, PowerBait, and NightCrawlers continued to bring in limits. Trolling with flashers and a NightCrawler, an olive WoolyBugger, or Red and Gold Thomas Buoyant (sort of sounds like last week’s report, doesn’t it). Drifting over the shore (which is starting to show) between the two natural lakes with NightCrawlers and PowerBait not only brought in some nice limits, it’s also very relaxing. Shore anglers are using Salmon Eggs, NightCrawlers and PowerBait.

Mike and Yvette Townsend of Valley Center had limits using PowerBait in the morning, while Mark Shields of Santa Barbara landed a beaut of an Alper, a 5 ¼ pounder using a fly. Lake Sabrina Boat Landing plans a stocking of Alpers in the next couple of weeks. The Department of Fish and Game stocked the lake on Wednesday with another very nice load of fish.

Lake Sabrina Boat Landing will start FALL hours on September 20th.

SUNDAY  7:00am to 6:00pm

MONDAY  8:00am to 6:00pm

TUESDAY  8:00am to 6:00pm

WEDNESDAY   8:00am to 6:00pm

THURSDAY   8:00am to 6:00pm
FRIDAY 8:00am to 6:00pm

SATURDAY  7:00am to 7:00pm

Like I said last week – It’s that time of year, summer-fall/fall-summer. It appears this week we’ll have a bit of summer again, but just a bit cooler. Highs are expected to be in the mid 60s and lows in the mid 40s. REMEMBER the campgrounds tend to be a bit cooler as the chilly air settles in the pockets down by the streams. It’s very strange how the same temperature feels a whole lot colder when that FALL nip arrives. You can check www.weather.gov and enter ASPENDELL, CA on the site and it will give you a fairly good hint at the weather or check in with Howard at www.MammothWeather.com.

WHEN YOU COME TO THE LAKE REMEMBER A JACKET

EVEN IF IT?S 100° IN BISHOP!

The following USFS campgrounds will be closing next Sunday: North Lake, Sabrina Camp, Mountain Glen and Willow. There is a full hook-up RV campground, Creekside RV park which is on the road to South Lake. We’ll try and keep you updated on the campground closings.

Remember your polarized dark glasses and sunscreen. You’ve got sun coming at you in ALL directions and the rays from the water are deadly! Also, remember when applying sunscreen, bug juice or any other FU-FU juice, WASH YOUR HANDS! The juice you apply will taint your tackle and bait. You know it tastes yucky, the fish think it tastes yucky, too, although have you ever tasted PowerBait or Worms? To each their own.

The Lake Sabrina crew is looking forward to seeing you all this year!

WHEN YOU COME TO THE LAKE REMEMBER A JACKET

EVEN IF IT?S 100° IN BISHOP!

Well, the nippy weather came in with some strong breezes this weekend. Not sure if its the nippy fall weather or just some isolated nippy weather, but it felt pretty darn nippy this morning. Rick even cranked up the wood stove to keep us women-folk warm. Rick and I did see some fall colors over in the Deep Spring and Fish Lake Valley areas this past week, so not sure what that might mean for our area. There is a handful of Aspen leaves on the Lake Sabrina road so stay tuned. This bit of cool weather may start everything.

The catching remained good despite the w-i-n-d. You all should know the scoop by now. But just in case, in the inlets Salmon Eggs, NightCrawlers, PowerBait and jigs. Those trolling are using flashers and a NightCrawler or just an Olive WoolyBugger, Lures with a bit of red, or a NightCrawler (DONT FORGET THAT SWIVEL). Drifting and enjoying the scenery while using PowerBait or a NightCrawler, or from shore fishing with Salmon Eggs, PowerBait or NightCrawlers also working well.

The Department of Fish and Game stocked the lake on Thursday with another very nice load of fish. THANKS DFG! The Ladman Family made good on those stockers taking many home for dinner.

Sunday morning the temperature was a balmy 41 degrees with a slight breeze ? wind chill temp ? 35 degrees. Highs for Sunday were expected to be in the mid 50s. That was the lows during this past week. We did here of some snow flurries in Mammoth and the Rock Creek area and even at Lake Sabrina Boat Landing. This week’s forecast is for temps to warm back to the mid 60s for highs and the mid 40s for lows. You can check www.weather.gov  and enter ASPENDELL, CA on the site and it will give you a fairly good hint at the weather or check in with Howard at www.MammothWeather.com.

Well, the suckers have gone back to the depths of the lake to feed the browns.

All USFS campgrounds are still open. The price this year to camp at the Forest Service campgrounds are $21.00. The only USFS campground that accepts reservations is Four Jeffery. There 31 sites available for reservations: you can book on-line at www.recreation.gov or call 1-877-444-6777. All other campsites at Four Jeffery and the other campgrounds are first come, first served. There is a full hook-up RV campground ? Creekside RV park which is on the road to South Lake.

This cool weather should take care of the rest of those pesky skeeters, at least lets hope so! Remember your polarized dark glasses and sunscreen. Youve got sun coming at you in ALL directions and the rays from the water are deadly! Also, remember when applying sunscreen, bug juice or any other FU-FU juice, WASH YOUR HANDS! The juice you apply will taint your tackle and bait. You know it tastes yucky, the fish think it tastes yucky too, although have you ever tasted PowerBait or worms? To each their own.
