REPORT

Updated March 1, 2010

Fontana resident, Kevin Hixson, Jr., 9, has the reputation as a respected angler among fishermen at a very young age.  Last Sunday, February 28th, Kevin accompanied his father, Kevin Hixson, Sr. to Glen Helen Regional Park for a sunny day of fishing.  Using a yellow Powerbait, the younger Hixson caught a 3 lb., 2 oz. rainbow trout at Glen Helen’s large lake.

For the day, this was a pretty good catch; however, last year Kevin and his father were able to put a much larger meal on their table.  During a fishing expedition to Glen Helen last year, Kevin Jr. caught a 9 lb. trout; while his dad reeled in a 19 pounder.  You might say fishing skills were passed down from father to son in the Hixson family.  (photo attached for Kevin Hixson, Jr.)

Cucamonga-Guasti, Glen Helen, Prado, Yucaipa, and Mojave Narrows lakes will be receiving trophy sized fish Thursday, March 4th from Mt. Lassen.

Trout: Trout action has been decent with at least five catches a day.

Catfish: Catfish action is slowly coming back, with most of the action on the backside of the lake and parking lot 1.

Largemouth Bass: Bass actions is slow but is expected to take off in late March early April.

Bluegill: No action recorded

Carp: A few fisherman have had fun reeling in larger Carp this last week with a fifteen pound Carp being the largest.

Important Information

Recently the best baits included Powerbait: Rainbow, YumYum, Chart, Lime Twist and Chartreuse.

The better areas to fish for trout include Basin 2 located around Parking Lot 6 or 7.  Also, Parking Lot 1 point is an active area for trout.

If one is fishing specifically for Carp, Bass, or Catfish the backside of the lake is the best area.

We did not receive a fish plant this week by our hatchery but the state planted 750 pounds of Trout.

“Children benefit from outdoor activity,” said Interim Regional Parks Director, Maureen Snelgrove.  “The workshops were initiated last year and we offered three workshops to children ages five through nine.  The response was so strong we have increased the eligibility age as well as the number of workshops we are presenting this year.  In getting our youth enthusiastic about fishing, we will hopefully develop their interest in the sport and keep them coming to fish in our parks.”
San Bernardino County Regional Parks is well-known for their Trout Derbies.  Cucamonga-Guasti will also host the first derby of the season Saturday, December 12th.  Anglers come from across the Southland to try their hand at catching the largest trout in the fastest time to vie for valuable prizes.  From December 12th through April 6, 2010, Trout Derbies will be held at five of the County’s Regional Parks.  For a complete schedule, please visit www.county-parks.com or call (909) 38-PARKS.
