The Fisherman's Vices

In this edition of The Fisherman's Vice we explore vices that won't break the bank. Just because times are tough, it doesn't mean that life's simple pleasure should, or can, fall by the wayside. With much labor, and hard work, I have found several entries that when purchased through the right sources can provide the same relaxation for you as it does for your wallet.

Check these selections out at you local store, but don't be fooled by the prices. I wouldn't recommend anything that I haven't tried over, and over, and over again.

Featured Scotch: Lismore Single Malt

This tasty little treat hails to us from the Speyside region of Scotish distilleries. With a slight smokey aroma and a sweet finish, this lighter Scotch packs a great punch for the price. I have seen this Scotch as low as $17.99 a bottle and as high as $27.99. It is a great compliment to Connecticut wrapped cigars, as well as stronger cigars that might need a little sweetness to balance them out. Do I really need to give you another reason to buy a great Scotch that is easy on the wallet?

Featured Cigar: Perdomo "Mistakes" (6.5" x 55)
We didn't have to look too hard to find a great bargain with this cigar. The "Torpedo" shape usually begs a higher price, and from the smoke you'll see why. The triangle tip focuses the smooth smoke on the front of the palate, giving this Maduro a wonderfully balanced taste. Because these are not considered "Top of the line" Perdomos, you can usually get these cigars for around $3.00 a cigar. I know what you're think: "Why are you telling us this, when you should be keeping this secret to yourself?" Well, I'll tell you why. There is no way that I can smoke all of these cigars to myself, and I know when to ask for help. So please, I beg you, help me.

Featured Beer: Paulaner Oktoberfest
It is that time of year again when it is not only acceptable to drink beer out of the largest glass you can find, but it is the time of year where festivals celebrate the mass consumption of copious amounts of this liquid bread. Paulaner is consistently one of the best Oktoberfests you can find. This full-flavored amber ale makes me want to grow a handlebar mustache, play the accordion and fill up on bratwurst with spicy mustard. I can just see it now: Swaying slowing from side to side with the lively drone of the Oompapa Oompapa...Hmmm...I wonder where my wife hid my lederhosen...

Featured Wine: Avalon Cabernet Sauvignon - Napa, CA
Having spent several years in the wine industry is sales and as a head of different departments, I have had the privilege to taste many wonderful wines, and the burden to smile through the swill. There is nothing more rewarding than finding a gem among the coal. Avalon Cabernet Sauvignon has everything that you are looking for in a Cabernet, but at half the price. This bottle usually sells for around $15.00 and drinks like a $35.00 bottle. Heavy tones of chocolate, leather and up-turned soil jump out and scream for a steak. With the cold weather approaching, this is a perfect bottle to open up with a hearty soup, or just because.
